What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a custom restoration that covers the visible portion of a tooth. It can restore strength, shape and function when a tooth is too damaged or weakened for a smaller restoration.
A crown may be appropriate for a cracked or worn tooth, a tooth with a large existing filling, or a tooth that has received root canal treatment. Crowns can also complete a dental implant restoration.
When less tooth structure is affected, our dentists may discuss a composite filling or an inlay or onlay instead. The recommendation depends on the condition of the tooth, bite forces and long-term treatment goals.
Protecting the Tooth
When Is a Dental Crown Recommended?
A clinical examination and digital imaging help determine whether a crown is the most appropriate way to protect and restore the tooth.
Cracked or Broken Teeth
A crown can hold weakened tooth structure together and restore a functional biting surface.
Large or Failing Fillings
When too little natural tooth remains to support another filling, full coverage may provide better protection.
After Root Canal Treatment
A treated tooth may need reinforcement to reduce the risk of fracture during normal chewing.
Worn or Weakened Teeth
A custom crown can rebuild tooth form, improve bite balance and protect vulnerable structure.
Dental Implant Restoration
A crown can serve as the visible final restoration attached to a properly integrated dental implant.
Shape or Color Concerns
When clinically appropriate, a crown can improve the appearance of a significantly damaged or discolored tooth.
Materials & Technology
Crown Options at Ellui Dental
The material and workflow are selected around tooth position, bite demands, esthetics and the clinical condition.
Porcelain Crowns
Designed to reproduce the color and light-reflecting qualities of natural enamel, particularly for visible teeth.
Zirconia Crowns
A durable restorative option frequently considered where strength and resistance to biting forces are priorities.
E-Max Crowns
Lithium disilicate restorations combine translucency with strength and may be used in several areas of the mouth.
CEREC Same-Day Crowns
CEREC CAD/CAM allows eligible patients to have a crown digitally designed, fabricated and placed during one visit, without a temporary crown.
Your Visit
What to Expect During Crown Treatment
Your exact sequence may vary, but crown treatment at Ellui Dental generally follows four clear stages.
- 01
Examination & Digital Scans
Your dentist evaluates the tooth, surrounding tissues and bite before capturing the information needed for planning.
- 02
Tooth Preparation
Damaged or weakened structure is addressed and the tooth is carefully shaped to support the restoration.
- 03
Crown Design & Fabrication
Your crown is designed for fit, function and appearance. Eligible CEREC cases may be fabricated in the office.
- 04
Placement & Bite Adjustment
The crown is bonded securely, then checked and adjusted so the bite feels balanced and comfortable.
After Crown Placement
Caring for Your Dental Crown
Daily brushing, careful flossing and regular dental examinations help protect the tooth beneath your crown and the surrounding gums. Avoid chewing hard non-food objects, and contact Ellui Dental if your crown feels loose or your bite feels different.

Common Questions
Dental Crown FAQs
Clear answers to common questions about crown treatment at Ellui Dental.
Can a dental crown be completed in one visit?
For eligible patients, CEREC CAD/CAM technology may allow Ellui Dental to design, fabricate and place a crown during one appointment. Your dentist must first evaluate whether a same-day workflow is appropriate for your tooth.
How do I know whether I need a crown or a filling?
A filling generally repairs a smaller area of damage. A crown covers the visible tooth and may be recommended when a large filling, crack or significant loss of tooth structure makes a smaller restoration less predictable.
Do I need a crown after root canal treatment?
Some root canal-treated teeth benefit from crown coverage because they are weakened or face substantial chewing forces. The recommendation depends on the tooth, remaining structure and location in the mouth.
What crown materials does Ellui Dental offer?
The current crowns page lists porcelain, zirconia and E-Max options. Your dentist will recommend a material based on strength, appearance, tooth position and bite requirements.
Does dental insurance cover crowns?
Coverage varies by plan, clinical need, deductibles and annual limits. Ellui Dental provides information for Cigna, Delta Dental PPO Premier and MetLife patients, along with financing and payment-plan resources.
How should I care for a dental crown?
Brush and floss consistently, keep regular dental visits and avoid using the crowned tooth to bite hard non-food objects. Contact the office if the crown feels loose, the bite feels uneven or discomfort persists.
